Detailed description of Valley of the Eagles Golf Course

Valley of the Eagles Golf Course is a semi-private 18-hole golf course located just 25 miles west of downtown Cleveland in Elyria, Ohio.

The course was built on land that was from 1926-2013 had been Spring Valley Country Club.

Valley of the Eagles opened for play in August 2018. The course was completely redesigned by a team from Jack Nicklaus design.

The golf course plays to a par of 72 and plays to a maximum distance of 6,941 yards. The course winds through the Black River Valley’s sheer black-shale cliffs and along the Black River, with mature elm, oak and ash trees lining the fairways.

Nearly every hole is new, though certain spots and shots bring back memories.

#1 tee box is elevated. It’s a 335 yard par-4 from the blue tees (the second-longest of five sets) and doglegs sharply to the right. The Black River borders the right side of the fairway.

# 2 is  par-5 with elevated tees and doglegs left.

# 5 is a long par-3 playing to 276 yards from the tips over water and sand to an elevated green.

#s 11-18 run along the Black River. Thousands of trees were removed and the open look is obvious on the 426-yard 12th, where a cliff can be seen behind the green.

#14 is a 344-yard par 4. The tee is on an island in the Black River, and the golfer must play over a bank to the fairway. The approach is about 100 yards back to the left to a small island green.

#17 brings the river more into play. It sets up a strong finisher.

#18 is a par 5 that plays 512 yards from the blue tees. The green is shallow, two-tiered and sits behind water. The longer hitters will have to decide whether it’s worth going for in two, and even a layup to the perfect yardage will still be intimidating.

Working in this area and got out early so why not enjoy the sunny afternoon. I don't know what this course (Spring Valley CC) was like from 1926 - 2013, but Jack Nicklaus Group has a real winner here now. We only had time for nine (9) holes so we paid our $25 and got paired up with locals (60+) John & Frank. I always like filling up a foresome with the locals as they give you the Real History and hole playing tips. They have five (5) tees to pick from that stretch from Green 4,654 / 63.5 / 107 up to Black 6,888 / 74.7 / 133 on this Par 36/36 winding and treelined layout. Conditions today were wet because of two (2) days of rain but was draining very good. Fairway landing areas for those tee shots were mostly fair but the views from there got very narrow and demanding. Sand traps were well placed in the fairways and protecting those large but undulating fast greens. We played a mix of Blue/White tees that put our Par 4's closer to 400yds or less because carries of 190-200yds can make it a long day with wet conditions. The #1 is a tight dogleg right (river on the inside) 335yd hole that pays dividends to a 200yd+ cut shot off that elevated tee. The #2 is a Par 5 that at 453yds will give you a easy Par if you play three (3) safe shots to that elevated green. The #3 Par 4 is another dogleg right, only at 422yds, your 2nd shot is a long narrow shot to get home. The #4 Par 5 at 519yds is short but your 2nd and 3rd shots need to split the trees on a 30yd wide fairway. The #5 Par 3 plays 111yds up to 223yds and is all carry to its narrow green with a bailout to the right side. The #6 is their Hcp 2 and can play from 448yds down to 371yds on this tough straightaway Par 4. The finishing #9 at 384yds has water down the left side and creek crossing at 240yds out that forces choices at the tee box. It took 2hrs 15minutes to complete as the course was packed with mostly foursomes and looking for balls in that long wet rough. Ended up shooting 40 w/17putts thanks to my playing partners insight on where to score from....Thanks Guys.

Day 80 - 100 days, 100 courses (Saturday, May 31, 2019)

Another day trying to outrun the rain and failing.

We got in 16 holes and I managed to lose 6 balls in that time while hitting 85 shots.

The lost balls mostly went in the water that winds around the course.

It was a fun afternoon with Brendon Truscott another Union alum. Brendon and I often play in Boston but it's tough to play with him because his game is so good.

Drives me nuts. Thanks for flying out Bren.
